What is a facelift?
A facelift is a surgical procedure which helps rejuvenate the face by eliminating loose saggy skin and thereby smoothing many wrinkles. There are several variants of the procedure, depending on the area of the face (and/or neck) which needs the most help.
How long before I can resume normal activities after my facelift?
Most patients return to most normal activities, even work, within one to two weeks. Vigorous exercise should be restricted for about three weeks, however. Some patients look quite good (without significant swelling or bruising) as early as three days postop. And there is very little pain or discomfort with this surgery.
Is a facelift performed under general anesthesia?
It can be, but most are done under local anesthesia with moderate sedation. Medications are given through an IV line so the patient is in sort of a "twilight sleep ", and injections of local anesthetic keep them quite comfortable.
Can I expect permanent results from a facelift?
No. The process of aging continues after a facelift, and the loss of elasticity in the facial skin is part of that aging process. One can usually expect the results to last seven to ten years, although it should be realized that you will always look better at any point in time than had you not undergone the facelift. For this reason, a majority of patients do not feel the need to repeat the surgery, feeling that their appearance even after some skin laxity recurs remains acceptable because they are now older.
What is the basic procedure of Facelift?
The basic approach is the elevation of the skin and soft tissue of the face (and neck) so that it can be tightened and trimmed. The incisions are placed such that the resultant scars are inconspicuous. Sometimes the underlying muscle fascia is also tightened, if it is found to be lax.
What are the benefits of a facelift procedure?
Jowls and wrinkles are reduced, and the patient no longer looks tired and old.
Are there significant risks associated with facelift surgery?
Actually there are not, if done by a careful, well-trained plastic surgeon! Most undesired sequelae are mild and easily treated, but most patients find the surgery easily tolerated and the recovery prompt and painfree.
