An Interview With Dr. Michael Vincent MD , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Bethesda

1. What is the average cost of face lift surgery?

Surgical fees vary widely depending on the extent of the surgery. Surgical fees can vary from $4,000-$25,000 but average $6000-$7000 in most areas. Additional fees for the operating room and anesthesia are extra and average $1,500-$3,000.

2. Do you tighten the drooping muscles?

A face lift usually includes tightening of the loose skin and tightening of the underlying neck and facial muscles as well.

3. Will a face lift help the dark circles and bags under my eyes?

No. Eyelid issues are best addressed by specific eyelid surgery referred to as a blepharoplasty. Lower lid blepharoplasty usually helps the puffiness under the eyes and may indirectly improve the dark circles as well. Dark circles alone can be more challenging, and are usually best treated by cosmetics(that help lighten the pigmentation) and/or light chemical peeling.

4. Why is a revision face lift more difficult than a first-time face lift?

This is not always true. Revisional surgery comes in many forms. Revisional surgery may be more challenging if there is a significant amount of underlying scarring or some significant complication from the first operation. However, secondary facelifts are not uncommonly done as an individual ages, and the recovery is often easier the second time around. Your doctor will be able to give you an idea about the recovery from a revisional procedure.

5.Do I go home after plastic surgery?

Yes. Most plastic surgery procedures are done on an outpatient basis. However, you should have a friend or loved one with you for the first 24-48 hours to help look over your recovery. Overnight stays or 24 hour stays may be desirable for longer or more extensive surgical procedures.

6. When can I "work out"?

Most of the time, you can walk right away. However, you really should not do any significant work out for a minimum of 2-3 weeks after surgery and it may be as long as 6 weeks depending on the procedures performed and your recovery.

7. How long will bruising and swelling last?

Bruising and swelling are quite variable. Most patients will have some bruising that lasts 10-14 days. Occasionally, some patients may bruise more and it can take 6-8 weeks for all the bruising to resolve. Most bruising can be covered with makeup, hairstyling ,etc. after about 8-10 days. It is always better to allow more time for your recovery.
