An Interview With Dr. Holzapfel, A Qualified Facial Plastic Surgeon In Cincinnati

What is the basic procedure of Facelift?

Patients will usually elect to have some type of "twilight " or sedation anesthesia when they undergo a facelift. Incisions are made around the ear and hidden in the hairline. The skin is elevated to give access to the facial fascia. Most trained surgeons will utilize a SMAS lifting technique in which the fascia layer is lifted and secured. The skin is then redraped in a more youthful position and the excess is removed. Usually a light compressive dressing is applied overnight.

What are the objectives of facelift?

The objectives of a facelift include reducing the look of jowls, lines around the mouth, and cheek lines. Facelifts are also used to lift a sagging neck and improve the jawline.

What is a facelift?

A facelift is a procedure used to improve the look of the lower face. As the face ages, many people develop prominent jowls as well as neck laxity. These areas of laxity can lend an elongated look to the face making people appear drawn and tired. A facelift is used to resuspend these areas of droop to their original height. This reduces that vertical aging and restores a more rounded, youthful look. With a facelift, incisions are hidden around the ears and along the hairline. The skin and soft tissues are elevated and a specific layer of fascia, called the SMAS, is tightened with sutures. Tightening this layer leads to a longterm result, usually 7 to 10 years.

Are there significant risks associated with facelift surgery?

The most common complication of the facelift procedure is a hematoma. These can range from very small, insignificant collections of blood under the skin, to large, painful blood collections. For large hematomas, the treatment is immediate evacuation of the blood. Other risks can include scarring, numbness, and facial nerve damage.

What are the benefits of a facelift procedure?

Facelifts can really brighten up a patient's face by reducing the folds around the mouth as well as removing the excess skin around the neck. Many women undergo facelifts to decrease their jowls and get rid of a sagging neck.
