An Interview With Dr. Richard T Ethridge, MD, PhD, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Fort Worth

1. Who is a good candidate for facelift surgery?

A preliminary consultation is the best way to determine if you’re a good candidate for any cosmetic surgery procedure. In general, a facelift may be appropriate for women or men who are:

• psychologically stable

• close to their ideal weight (within 30%)

• able to maintain a healthy lifestyle

• realistic in their expectations

• looking to improve self-image (how they perceive and feel about themselves)

Realistic expectations are important. It’s best not to expect a facelift to change your life. However, a facelift could be a good choice for you, and you may be an appropriate candidate for a facelift even if you do not meet every criterion listed above.

2. Is a facelift performed under general anesthesia?

Yes, facelifts are performed under general anesthesia.

3. Must I stay in the hospital?

Facelifts are generally an outpatient procedure.

4. How long should I wait after my facelift before I resume normal activities?

Following a facelift, you may typically return to work wearing makeup within one to two weeks. Exercise and other more strenuous activity may be resumed within two to three weeks.

5. How do I find a qualified surgeon in my area?

I recommend meeting with several respected surgeons so that you can gauge who you are most comfortable with. Also, confide in your other doctors for referrals (dermatologists and OBGYNs are great resources). Be sure to talk with other friends and/or family members who have had similar procedures; ask them about their experiences.

6. Will facelift surgery eliminate all of my facial wrinkles?

Although facelifts can greatly reduce wrinkles, the ideal result is a natural appearance. Removing all wrinkles would create an undesirable and unnatural tight look. The goal of facelift surgery is not complete wrinkle elimination but a natural and youthful appearance.

7. Am I too young (or old) for a facelift?

The most common age range for women seeking facelifts is between age 50 and 70, but every individual’s needs are different. A consultation is the best way to determine the most appropriate time for a facelift.

8. Will it be obvious that I' ve had a face lift?

The goal of a facelift is to restore a more youthful appearance without an unnaturally tight appearance.
