An Interview With Dr. Shuter, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Jupiter

What are the objectives of facelift?

The objective of a facelift are improvement in the overall appearance due to aging. One can get an idea of a possible facelift result by laying flat in bed and looking at a mirror directly over your face. It should be understood that any surgeon can simply pull and lift; this usually will lead to a too tight, unnatural result. Only a skilled artistic surgeon can lift and tighten in a natural, beautiful way.

What is a facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure to improve the effects of aging. As we age, certain changes can be seen- loosening of facial skin, wrinkles, jowling, muscle banding, etc. Facelifting can address these issues in a safe, proven way.

What are the benefits of a facelift procedure?

An excellent facelift can "turn back the clock " on facial aging. The old fashioned technique only dealt with the skin laxity, lifting and tightening the droopy skin. A modern facelift will also address the internal muscles and supporting structures of the face and neck. This leads to a more natural result and better longevity.

Are there significant risks associated with facelift surgery?

Facelift procedures obviously have risks, but they are relatively uncommon, usually less that 5%. The major risks include infection, bleeding, scarring problems and unnatural results. The most feared complication is that of nerve injury which is thankfully very rare in skilled hands due to in depth understanding of the facial anatomy.

What is the basic procedure of Facelift?

The basic facelift technique begins with planning- in many ways the most important stage by far. The surgical maneuvers start with a superficial skin elevation, carefully controlling bleeding and avoiding critical structures such as branches of the facial nerve. At this point, the muscles and supporting structures of the face (SMAS layer) are identified and dissected. They are elevated and advanced carefully into the perfect position, using test sutures along the way. These are then gently sutured into place. The skin flap is then advanced and tacked in front of and behind the ears. The excess skin is then carefully trimmed away and the flap is beautifully sutured into place. The sutures are then dressed with antibiotic ointment and dressings, completing the surgery. Additional maneuvers are utilized as necessary including liposuction, muscle band division, etc.
