An Interview With Dr. Michael A. Jazayeri, M.D. , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Los Angeles

1. What do I do to prepare for facelift surgery?

If patient smokes, it is critical to refrain from smoking, second hand smoke, or using any nicotine products (gum, etc.) for at least 4 weeks before and at least 4 weeks after surgery. Since the skin is undermined, the risk of skin slough is increased. Any blood thinner medication such as Aspirin, Motrin, etc. or herbal medication must also be discontinued for 7-14 days before surgery. If the patient is over 40 years of age, or has any medical condition, a medical clearance from their physician is also required.

2. What happens at the preoperative face lift appointment?

A thorough history and appropriate exam is performed. I listen very carefully to what the patient's concerns are. Based on these concerns, I formulate a plan. I may suggest additional procedures to harmonize the face. Many times, when these suggestions are made, the patient agrees with the overall plan.

3. What does informed consent mean?

According to the American Medical Association, informed consent is a process of communication between a patient and physician that results in the patient's authorization or agreement to undergo a specific medical intervention.

4. Where will my face lift incisions be?

The incisions for a face lift are made just in front of the ear with extensions into the hair-bearing temple (if a brow lift is needed); the incision can also extend behind the ear lobe and the ear and extend into the hair (this is done if a neck lift is required).

5. What if I have a history of bad scars?

It is important to understand what the patient means by "bad scars". It is rare for a patient to have genetic disposition to keloid or thick scar formation after a face lift. Every "bad scar" I have examined on the face has been due to poor technique or surgical technique.

6. What about my daily medications before facelift surgery?

This must be reviewed by the patient's physician and the surgeon. For example, all blood thinners must be discontinued (if can be done safely) 7-14 days before surgery.

7. I take vitamins and supplements. Do I need to stop them before facelift surgery?

Low dose daily vitamins such as Centrum are allowed. All diet pills or herbal medication must be discontinued 14 days before surgery.
