An Interview With Dr. Jonathan Kaplan MD , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In New Orleans

1. What do I do to prepare for facelift surgery?

Stop smoking if you are smoking. Proceed with daily skin treatment for at least 3 weeks before surgery with Retin A every night and hydroquinone twice a day. This improves the health of the skin and may reduce darkening of incisions.

2. What happens at the pre operative face lift appointment?

Discuss the patient' s concerns and explain how different procedures treat those concerns. We also discuss the pre-op skin treatment regimen and get pre-op pictures.

3. What does informed consent mean?

We explain some of the most common risks and benefits of surgery but cannot ever mention every single possible risk. The bottom line is that surgery has inherent risks and sometimes unforeseen complications.

4. Where will my face lift incisions be?

Typically your incisions will be hidden within your temple hairline, down along the ear and then behind the ear and into the hairline behind the ear. There will be a separate incision just behind the chin.

5. What if I have a history of bad scars?

You could potentially have bad scars then after any operation. We can minimize tension on the incisions which can help with minimizing scars but in the end, there will be scars and there' s no guarantee if they will be good or bad.

6. What about my daily medications before facelift surgery?

You can continue to take your regular medications along with the skin care regimen discussed above. However, stop taking any blood thinners, such as aspirin, if ok with your primary doctor. Unfortunately, if you are on coumadin or any other major blood thinner, you may not be a candidate for a facelift.

7. I take vitamins and supplements. Do I need to stop them before facelift surgery?

You can continue to take vitamins and supplements except the ones that reduce platelet count and thin the blood.
