An Interview With Dr. Angie U. Song MD , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Tucson

1. What is the basic procedure of Face lift?

That is debatable by many surgeons, but we would all agree that the best procedure is one that allows a patient to look rejuvenated and rested not pulled and altered. Most of us use the SMAS or a "deep plane" technique. SMAS is the fascia layer overlying the muscles of the face and is the key to this redraping process. The deep plane dissects under this layer. No one should be just pulling the skin.00

2. Can I expect permanent results from a face lift?

One can expect a face lift to turn back the clock 10-15 years on a person but it does not stop the aging process in all of us. Thus, a face lift cannot be permanent. A well done face lift should last about 8-12 years.00

3. Is there a common technique for face lift procedures?

The most common technique is a variation of the SMAS technique. SMAS stands for "superficial musculo aponeurotic system" It's the anatomic fascia that holds the muscle of the face together. We identify this and will pull this in a superior position and suture this in place. This is also done in conjunction with excising the excess loose skin.00

4. Who is a good candidate for face lift surgery?

One that is healthy, does not smoke and is motivated to look younger and rejuvenated.00

5. Will face lift surgery eliminate all of my facial wrinkles?

It will greatly improve some wrinkles but will not eliminate all wrinkles. One may need additional procedures for that such as skin resurfacing and dermal fillers.00

6. Will it be obvious that I've had a face lift?

No, a well done face lift will have people wondering what is great about you, and why you look so rested but it should not make it look obvious.00

7. What types of face lift surgery are available?

The are lower face lifts which address the lower half of the face, full face lifts that also address the upper 1/3 of the face to include the brows, and mini-face lifts. Mini face lift or sometimes referred to as face tucks are generally performed on a younger patient that need minimal tightening of their underlying fascia.00
