An Interview With Dr. Turowski, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Winnetka

What is a facelift?

A face lift is a plastic surgery procedure that can remove excess fat, tighten muscles, and redrape the skin of the face, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

What are the benefits of a facelift procedure?

The ability for a facelift to restore a youthful appearance cannot be achieved, as well with any other procedure or treatment. When properly performed, a facelift turns back the clock by firming muscle tone, smoothing the skin, and restoring a youthful facial contour.

Are there significant risks associated with facelift surgery?

A facelift carries the same risks as any other surgery. In general, this is a very safe procedure if performed by an experienced and well-educated surgeon. Some scarring may occur post surgery, but a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon is able to hide these scars so that they are not visible. The most common scars are found behind the ears and beneath the chin. However, these scars will fade and will become almost invisible about 1-3 months post surgery. There are no significant risks that are particular to this procedure.

What is the basic procedure of Facelift?

Traditionally, Facelift is designed to tighten the skin and raise it back up. Although in rare cases desirable results may be achieved by skin only, tightening and repositioning, in most circumstances a more advanced approach is optimal. This involves not only skin layer surgery but also repositioning and tightening of the loose facial and neck musculature and fascia (SMAS). In most cases extra fat deposits in the neck are removed through liposuction techniques. The incision for a facelift usually begins in the hair-covered area near the temple and continues in front of the ear, around the ear lobe, behind the ear and back into the hair. This incision placement makes the scars well hidden. The procedure takes usually about 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the case. Face lifting is performed either under general anesthesia or under IV sedation.
