Can I expect permanent results from a facelift?

Unfortunately there few things in life that are permanent. Your tissues will continue to age. With a successful facelift, you can expect to look improved for perhaps 8-10 years, depending on your age. You should not wait until you "really need it." Usually, by that time, your tissues have loosened very significantly, and the result may not be as good. An ideal age for a facelift is between 45 and 60. We operate on many older inidviduals with very good results but earlier is better.

What is the basic procedure of Facelift?

Every surgeon has his/her personal variations on the theme. Most contemporary facelifts, however, lift the tissues of the face by tightening the SMAS (subcutaneous musculoaponeurotic system) layer just below the skin. Moving or tightening this layer pulls the skin into a better position.

Are there significant risks associated with facelift surgery?

Yes. This a relatively low risk operation, but there are real risks.  Assuming you are in adequate physical shape to have an anesthesia, the major risk is the possibility of injury to a branch of the facial nerve. This is the nerve that sends branches throughout the face to move the muscles of the face. For an experienced facelift surgeon, the risk of injury to a branch of the nerve should be minimal. Also, numbness of the ears after surgery can be bothersome. This has to do with placement of the incisions behind the ears and is usually temporary. In addition, fluid like serum or blood can accumulate under the skin and need to be drained.
